Difference between wet rot and dry rot
Although they might sound similar, these two conditions are caused by completely different types of fungus. The conditions they require to thrive are very different, so if you have one, you are unlikely to have the other. Dry rot needs moisture levels of around 20% to thrive whereas wet rot needs moisture content closer to 50%. Both can cause extensive damage to your home, so it’s a good idea to call in the experts if you’re unsure.
What is dry rot?
Dry rot is the common name for a type of fungus that feeds on damp wood. It is also known as Serpula Lacrymans. This type of fungal rot thrives on forest floors where it digests and breaks down fallen timber to help clear the forest floor for new growth. However, it can also thrive in properties when the conditions are right.
Dry rot can be found in homes that are suffering from a damp problem. It can impact joists, floorboards, door frames and more. Wherever there is damp timber in your home, you could see dry rot develop. Dry rot is also known to work its way through masonry to find suitable wood to digest.
The fungus spreads through spores that build up on suitable material. The fungus secretes enzymes that digest the wood and leave behind brittle and dried out timber. This is why dry rot is so problematic, as it can cause structural problems for your home. The wood left behind is dark and brittle and will crumble easily between your fingers.
If you spot the signs of dry rot in your home, we recommend getting in touch with our team. We can help to identify the root cause of the issue, drive out the dampness, address the dry rot problem and then fix the cosmetic issues left behind by the rot.
Signs of dry rot in your home
Where there is dry rot, there is usually a damp problem, which is why a damp and musty odour is often the first telltale sign that homeowners will notice. Dry rot needs moisture levels of around 20% to thrive, so if you have a damp issue, this can soon lead to a dry rot issue.
You might notice a furry white growth on wooden structures. This might be out of sight, so you may need to pull up floorboards to see the damage. In the later stages of growth, the white will give way to a rusty orange bloom that spreads and scatters its spores far and wide.
Wood damaged by dry rot will be dark and brittle with a cuboidal cracking pattern. This causes the wood to crumble in small cube shapes.
