What is rising damp?

Rising damp is a common issue in the UK thanks to the high levels of rainfall and the method of home construction. Our homes use a double cavity wall to protect against rising damp, and this is further secured with a damp proof course chemical treatment. But both methods are known to fail, particularly if drainage around the property is insufficient.

Often the first sign of a rising damp problem in the home is a water tide mark on the walls. This will rise from the ground up, and will reach higher and higher as the problem progresses. This is caused by mineral salts from building materials that are dissolved and then able to travel up the internal walls. As the moisture evaporates, the salts are left behind, leaving darkened marks on the walls.

Rising damp will cause more than just cosmetic damage. It also makes your home very uncomfortable to live in and can cause your energy bills to increase, as a damp home is much more difficult to heat. It could also impact the resale value if you are thinking about selling.

Can rising damp be fixed?

Rising damp is very treatable at every stage, but the longer you leave it, the more expensive it is likely to be. If you are considering buying a home with a rising damp problem, be aware of the potential cost of putting this right, and make sure you understand the extent of the problem so you know exactly what you are up against.

We don’t recommend DIY treatments for rising damp as this could result in poor outcomes that cause more damage to your home. Instead, trust the experts at Tapco Homedry to help put things right. The treatment could include improving the drainage around your home, installing a physical moisture barrier, or repairing a faulty damp proof course. We will guide you every step of the way so you can make an informed choice.

Is rising damp a structural problem?

Rising damp can become a structural problem if it is left untreated. It’s also possible that the issue could be more widespread than you realise, which is why it’s vital to get a rising damp assessment to better understand what you are dealing with.

Rising damp is known to cause damage to your cavity wall ties, which could cause outer walls to eventually collapse. Another common issue with rising damp is the risk of dry rot, which can impact the timber structures in your home.
