Looking up or down: whether to choose a loft or basement conversion

Running out of room in your house in inevitable. Suddenly you don’t have enough space to house guests or extra furniture. You don’t have the budget or the time to move house. This is why loft and basement conversions are becoming increasingly popular.

A growing number of people are deciding to improve and invest in their current homes. They are extending by means of loft and basement conversions. Few people are choosing to uproot and move because of the likelihood of having to renovate a large portion of the new property.

Loft conversions are generally cheaper than basement conversions. They don’t require planning permission for the most part and are an effective way of using the existing space under your roof. Usually they can house an additional bedroom, a bathroom or study area which are what most families are looking for.

Construction is typically easy and therefore, is completed in a short amount of time, most probably in little over a month. If no alteration to the shape of the roof is required, it will be ever cheaper.

However, there is limited space with a loft conversion, especially in comparison to a basement conversion which can scale the length of the garden if you choose. Head height is also restricted due to planning limits and the original height of the roof and that of the neighbour’s roof.

Planning permission will generally be required for basement conversions and extending your home from underneath is the more costly option. Matters such as protection against damp and dealing with a waterproof tanking system can be stressful. Moreover, the overall time of construction, along with obtaining planning permission can take several long months.

Basement conversions will allow room for a high ceiling in comparison to limited and sloping ceilings guaranteed with a loft conversion. This is doubly true because you can dig down quite deep, as well as far out to allow for a mass of space, although this is dependent on time and money.

Just remember that with either option, try and keep it simple and effective by staying with a traditional square or rectangle shape. It will be cost-efficient and will add a lot of value to your property overall. Conversions are an effective way of gaining more room without the expense of moving home.
