IDENTIFYING DRY ROT
The wonderful All Saints Church and well known meeting place in the heart of Kingston-upon-Thames, but alas, the dreaded Dry Rot has no conscience and attacked the roof timbers of the church just as it would any other building. We were instructed by our client to carry out a survey to the roof timbers, where it was noticed fungus was growing. Our qualified timber and damp surveyor gained access to the area of roofing timbers and immediately discovered an attack of true Dry Rot (Serpula lacrymans), an attack of Wet-Rot fungus (Coniophora puteana) and infestations of Woodworm, Deathwatch Beetle (Xestobium rufovollosum), which was affecting and weakening the structural timbers. It was also confirmed that the roof was leaking, which had caused the attack. A detailed report and our recommendations were submitted to our client and we were instructed to carry out the restoration work.
ERADICATING DRY ROT
Some of the pews had to be removed to allow scaffolding to be erected inside the Church to gain access to the affected roof timbers. The roof was fully supported and the affected timbers carefully removed and taken to a safe place for disposal. The surrounding masonry was thoroughly treated with a dry rot fungicidal masonry solution and the timbers were replaced with new treated timber to match existing. The scaffolding was removed and the pews were refitted to complete a complex dry rot restoration project. The leaking roof which had caused the problem was repaired by our clients own roofing contractor.
