What is rising damp?

Rising damp is the name given to an issue with the foundations of your home. Your home should be protected against moisture rising up from the ground, but these measures are known to fail, which can leave your home vulnerable. Sometimes these measures do not fail, but they are overwhelmed by secondary factors such as poor drainage. The first sign that you have rising damp in your home is often a smell, followed by darkened tide marks on your walls.

These tide marks develop when moisture from the ground dissolves salts and minerals in the building materials that are then carried up the wall. As the moisture evaporates, this leaves a darkened line of mineral salts. If you’ve noticed this issue in your home, you may need to address issues with your damp proof course or look at improving drainage around your property. We can help to guide you through the process.

Can rising damp be fixed?

Rising damp is a very treatable problem, no matter what stage we catch it. However, if we catch it sooner, this will usually mean that we don’t have to tackle structural problems that appear alongside an extensive rising damp problem. In the early stages, the issues may be purely cosmetic, but as it progresses, we start to see structural problems that can be more expensive to fix.

We always begin with a damp survey to understand the source and extent of the problem. Rather than make assumptions, we can act on insight and experience, ensuring that the treatment recommended is appropriate to the situation. This ensures that treatment is cost-effective, reliable and suited to your home.

Is rising damp a structural problem?

While rising damp is rarely a structural problem, it can pave the way for more serious problems to arise. When left untreated, rising damp might damage your cavity wall ties which can cause outer walls to collapse. It can also lead to a secondary condition called dry rot, which might impact timber structures in your home, including flooring, stairs and joists.

Rising damp will also create unpleasant conditions in your home, making it difficult to heat and also a breeding ground for toxic mould. We often see these issues in properties that have been left vacant for a long time, which is why a pre-purchase damp survey is essential to understand the extent of damp damage to a property you might be buying.
