What is rising damp?

This moisture carries soluble salts from the ground and building materials, leading to salt deposits on your internal walls when the moisture evaporates. This is one common telltale sign that you have rising damp, as you’ll be able to see the tide mark of where these salt deposits have rested.
Rising damp may be caused by a faulty damp proof course, or it could be the result of poor draining around your home. Modern homes are designed to deal with damp with proper drainage and ventilation, but these measures are known to fail, or they may have been installed incorrectly. Can rising damp be fixed?

This is often preferred, as a new damp proof course won’t be effective in already damp masonry.
