Is dry rot the same as wet rot?

Dry rot and wet rot are not the same thing. First, they are caused by two different types of fungus. And second, they require very different conditions to be able to thrive. While wet rot needs moisture levels of around 50%, dry rot only needs moisture levels of around 20% to be able to thrive.

Wet rot leaves wood soft and spongy while dry rot leaves it dry and brittle. Both can impact the structural integrity of your home and should be addressed as a matter of urgency.

What is dry rot?

Dry rot is the common name for a type of fungus that can be found in your home. The Serpula lacrymans is usually found on the forest floor where it helps to break down damp and rotting wood to make space for new growth. However, it can also find its way into your home given the right conditions.

The fungus attacks wood by secreting an enzyme that digests the structure of the wood. This will leave the wood dry and brittle, which impacts its structural integrity. If you have a damp problem in your home, you are more likely to end up with dry rot. The fungus can even make its way in through masonry.

Once damaged by dry rot, the wood left behind will be dry, dark and brittle. It will break apart easily under pressure, which means it will no longer have its structural integrity. This can lead to collapse of internal structures including floorboards, door frames and stairs.

You might assume that dry rot would only be found in older properties, but properties of all ages are at risk. An underlying damp problem will usually be a contributing factor to your dry rot problem.

How to spot dry rot in your home

The first sign of a dry rot problem in your home is usually not one that you can see, so you’ll need to use all of your senses to detect this problem. Dry rot leads to an earthy or musty odour, which is often also associated with a damp problem.

On further inspection, you might discover a furry white growth on wood in your home. As the fungus matures, a rusty orange bloom emerges and erupts with spores that spread throughout your home. These spores might look like brick dust on surfaces throughout your home.

Once the damage is done, the wood left digested and left behind will be darker than surrounding wood. It will also be very dry and brittle. The cuboidal cracking structure will cause the wood to break into small cube shapes.

How is dry rot treated?

The first step in dealing with a dry rot problem is to address the underlying damp problem. From there, we will treat the timber in your home with a fungicidal treatment to prevent it from spreading further. Finally, we can replace the impacted wood with pre-treated timber and this should help to prevent the issue from returning.
