What is dry rot?
Dry rot is caused by a fungus called Serpula lacrymans. It is most commonly found on forest floors where it plays an important role in breaking down fallen trees to help make space for new growth. Unfortunately for homeowners, it can also find its way into your home, where it is more commonly referred to as dry rot.
The name actually refers to how the wood is left after it has been digested by the fungus. It actually requires damp conditions to be able to take hold, which is why there is nearly always a water ingress problem present alongside the dry rot problem. It could attack floorboards, door frames, skirting board, stairs and roof rafters if the conditions are right.
The wood left behind by the dry rot fungus will lack structural integrity. It will break down easily between your fingers and will crumble into small cube shapes thanks to the telltale cuboidal cracking structure. If you think you might have spotted signs of dry rot or damp in your home, get in touch with the Tapco Homedry team to learn more about how we can help to put things right.
Is dry rot the same as wet rot?
While they both affect wood in the home, they are quite different and caused by different strains of fungus. Wet rot needs much higher moisture levels to thrive, usually around 50%. Dry rot needs lower moisture levels, but it still implies there is a water ingress problem, since it will still be around 25%.
Affected wood will also reveal if you have wet rot or dry rot. Wet rot leaves wood feeling soft and spongy while dry rot leaves it brittle and crumbling.
How to spot dry rot in your home
By learning to spot the early signs of dry rot in your home, you can have a much better chance of dealing with it before the issue becomes more serious. You’ll need to use all of your senses, as the first sign of dry rot is often a musty or earthy odour.
Upon further inspection, you might find a furry white growth on affected wood. As this matures, it will develop a rusty orange bloom that spreads from the centre. This means that it is spreading spores throughout your home on air currents. The spores look very similar to brick dust.
Once the dry rot has finished digesting the wood, it will leave behind dark and brittle wood that falls apart easily. The wood will break along its cuboidal cracking structure and this will cause it to crumble into small cube shapes. If you think you’ve spotted any of these signs in your home, it’s time to call in the experts.

How is dry rot treated?
We will first address any active dry rot using a fungicidal treatment that will help to stop it from spreading any further. Next, we can replace damaged wood with pre-treated wood which should help to limit the risk of it returning. Finally, we can also address the damp problem that is allowing the dry rot to thrive.
